How to Keep Your Child Active

By Courtney Fox

With a new study showing that obese people now outnumber underweight people across the globe, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has never been more important.

Over the past four decades, obesity in men has tripled and obesity in women has doubled. Childhood obesity is also on the rise. Children who are obese are also more likely to be obese as adults.

There is no prescription or home remedy or cure for obesity. A healthy lifestyle, with healthy eating and physical activity, is the simplest way to prevent obesity.

It is recommended that children get 60 minutes of physical activity per day; 30 minutes for adults. 60 minutes may seem like an easily achievable number, but with cellphones, videogames, and other distractions it can be hard. Here are some tips on how to keep your child active…

  1. Get outdoors

This is probably the simplest way to guarantee your child gets 60 minutes of physical activity, especially with the weather warming up. Have them play basketball or ride their bike. Or better yet, have them play a game with you so the whole family is staying active.

  1. Join a team

Another simple way to ensure physical activity, but one that costs money. Most of the time public schools will offer reduced signup fees to families who need a little extra help.

  1. Advocate for school recess

Many schools have discussed limiting recess time or getting rid of it altogether. Make sure your school administrators know how important recess time is for students! Not only does it keep them healthy, but it helps them focus on their school work.

  1. Walk or bike to school

If there is a safe route, have your kids walk or bike to school. This is an easy way to sneak in a few minutes of physical activity and it is also beneficial for the environment.
