My Health Story: Katana Williams

Katana Williams
River Rogue School-Based Health Center

Hello my name is Katana Williams and I am a Senior who is attending River Rouge High School.  I would like to share my health story. I came in right before Thanksgiving break and I was really sick.  I felt like no one could help me.  I then came to the health clinic and I got help.

Prior to coming to the clinic I felt weak and that I was very unhealthy. I have asthma and had been going to the hospital struggling with my asthma for the last three years.  I did not have the right medications because I couldn’t afford them.

After visiting the clinic, I felt safer and healthier. I believe I received very thorough care. Coming into the clinic made a strong difference to my health by helping me get my own insurance, teaching me about my medications, and obtaining them to better help me. This clinic is organized, has good open arms approach, and I am happy that it is in the school because many things might get overlooked and some people are unresponsive but the clinic hears me and understands my needs.

About the My Health Story Contest

School-Based Health Care Awareness Month is the time each year that we pause to celebrate the value of school-based, school-linked and school wellness programs. This year, we asked youth across Michigan to tell us how a School-Based or School-linked Health Center has improved their health and helped them to succeed in school. Contestants wereasked to submit an essay about their experiences with a Health Center. Stories will be posted daily on our website beginning in February during Awareness Month to the end of April when we host advocacy day. You can see all the contest entries here.
