Mental Health Provider Orientation @ Suburban Collection Showplace

With the influx of new sites and the new requirement of a mental health provider at each center there has been an increase in new MH staff to centers. Therefore, a new orientation from MDCH is being provided. This orientation meeting will take place on June 11th from 1-4 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. It will be a great opportunity to review the CAHC MH Orientation Manual, to meet other staff and get you acclimated to this wonderful program.

School Nurses & Immunization Class @ Lansing Center

The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will host the CDC Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Course (also called the Pink Book Course) on June 16-17, 2015, at the Lansing Center in Lansing, Michigan. This two-day course will be presented by Ray Strikas, MD, MPH, and JoEllen Wolicki, RN, BSN, immunization educators with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A state immunization update, given by the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), Division of Immunization, will also be included.Using content from the book Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (also known as the Pink Book), the class provides a comprehensive review of vaccine-preventable diseases and the recommended vaccines to prevent them. Participants will have many opportunities to ask questions.

Course Details

The class will be held at the Lansing Center in Lansing, Michigan. The registration fee will be $75. A copy of the Pink Book (valued at $40) will be provided to all attendees at no additional charge. The registration fee will include a continental breakfast for both days, beginning at 7:30 am. The fee will also include lunch for both days, refreshments during the afternoon breaks, and continuing ed credits.

Course participants are responsible for the cost of overnight accommodations. We are providing a list of some Lansing hotels, although there are many additional hotels in Lansing to choose from.

Participants are also responsible for the cost of parking. Parking is available underneath the Lansing Center. The cost per day is $6 per vehicle, per entrance. Attendees may pay with cash, or credit/debit cards. It is not necessary to have exact change.

Continuing Education

A variety of health care professionals may be eligible to earn continuing education for attending the Pink Book Course. A list of accreditation statements is posted on this website. Additional details will be available as we get closer to June. Participants will have the opportunity to obtain CE credits through the CDC online system within 30 days following the course.

Please Note: The course is scheduled 8:00 am – 5:00 pm on BOTH DAYS. A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30 am for both days.

Partial credits ARE NOT PROVIDED.  You must attend BOTH DAYS to receive any credit.

Additional Information

Space is limited. Once registration begins on April 6, please register as soon as possible.

The course has not been held in Michigan since 1996 and it is possible that this class may fill up in advance. Health care providers from out-of-state are welcome to attend this class. In fact, we are promoting the class to out-of-state providers as well as providers who live in Michigan. For all of these reasons, we are recommending that you register for the course in April or early May, if at all possible.

Cindy Weinbaum MD MPH, Acting Executive Secretary of the ACIP, will provide an overview of the following topics that are currently on the ACIP draft agenda, to include: the policy options, evidence, and considerations for routine use of MenB vaccines in adolescents; an overview of 9-valent HPV vaccination for persons who have completed an HPV vaccination series, cost-effectiveness, as well as GRADE and proposed guidance for use of 9vHPV vaccine; and, updates to the Child/Adolescent Immunization Schedule.

Ian Branam (Health Communication Specialist, TEKsystems Inc.) from NCIRD’s health communication science office (HCSO) will discuss plans and activities for National Immunization Awareness Month and what your organization or practice can do to help promote immunizations throughout the month of August.

Jill Roark MPH, Health Communication Specialist, NCIRD HCSO will present on ideas for Beating the Back to School Rush, including ideas to help parents and clinicians to take advantage of early summer break for vaccinations.

Webinar: The In’s and Out’s of Immigration Status and Medicaid

SCHA-MI presents a webinar to delve into immigration status and eligibility for Medicaid. We will present common barriers and fears immigrant families face, and how to encourage families with mixed immigration status to apply for benefits without fear of reprisal when becoming a citizen. The presentation will be broken down into 3 sections, with plenty of time to ask questions after each section.

Our presenters for this webinar are:

Angel Padilla, Health Policy Analyst, works closely with other health project staff to develop and implement National Immigration Law Center’s federal immigrant health policy agenda. Prior to joining NILC in February 2014, he was an immigration policy consultant at National Council of La Raza. Before that, he was a legislative assistant for Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), advising on issues related to health care and the Affordable Care Act, among others. Mr. Padilla also has interned with the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council and the U.S. House of Representatives. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree from Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Sonya Schwartz, a research fellow at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families (CCF), works improve access to health coverage for low-income children and families and also leads CCF’s work on coverage for immigrant families. Before joining CCF, Sonya was a program director at the National Academy for State Health Policy, where she led State Refor(u)m, an online network for health reform implementation. Sonya has worked on a broad range of health reform, and state health policy issues, including implementation of health reform, health insurance exchanges, essential health benefits, coverage expansions through Medicaid and CHIP, and commercial insurance reforms. Sonya holds a JD from the UCLA School of Law Program in public interest law and policy, and a BA in political science and Italian from Middlebury College.

Invest in your youth by spending two days learning how to support their voice.

Join us on July 8-9, 2015 for two full days of strategies, practice and ideas for how to start and support an effective Teen Advisory in your program or school. Teen Advisory Councils are an effective and meaningful way for teens to provide youth the opportunity and structure to be a part of the decision-making and governance of their own projects and initiatives in after-school programs and school settings. As a result of this 2-day training participants will:

  • Identify meaningful roles youth can play in programs.\
  • Learn the components and stages of Neutral Zone’s Teen Advisory Council.
  • Understand Youth Adult Partnerships and how to support them.
  • Practice strategies that effectively support youth-driven initiatives.
  • Participants will also receive a free copy of the Teen Advisory Council guidebook, a practical guide for starting and supporting a Teen Advisory.

Youth MHFA training – Traverse City Area

This is an opportunity for anyone interested/able to participate and become a certified instructor in either MHFA or YMHFA. This training is free except for your staff time, mileage, meals and lodging. Its an intensive training but can be useful for school staff and others you work with.

Please email Kim Batsche-McKenzie at batsche-mckenziek@michigan.gov potential certified instructor names, complete with the individual’s email addresses and training location preference. This offer will be available on a first come first serve basis until the trainings are filled.
